What is Char Dham Yatra?
Char Dham Yatra is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimages, comprising visits to four sacred shrines (Dhams) in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand: Yamunotri (source of Yamuna), Gangotri (origin of Ganga), Kedarnath (one of 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva), and Badrinath (one of 4 Dhams of India, dedicated to Lord Vishnu). The traditional yatra is undertaken in a clockwise direction starting from Yamunotri and ending at Badrinath. Devotees believe that completing this yatra washes away all sins and helps attain moksha (liberation). In 2025, over 4 million pilgrims completed the yatra. Due to its sacred significance and challenging Himalayan terrain, the temples are open only 6 months a year (April/May to October/November).
