Your first international trip is one of life's most exciting adventures — but it can also be overwhelming. Visa, flights, currency, immigration, customs — it all feels confusing. Don't worry. We've helped 20,000+ Indian travelers go abroad since 2003, and this complete first-timer's checklist will make sure you have a smooth, stress-free experience.
Step 1 — Choose the Right First Destination
Not every country is beginner-friendly. For first-time international travelers, we recommend: Visa-free or visa-on-arrival countries like Thailand, Maldives, Bali, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius. Easy English-speaking destinations like Singapore, Dubai, Malaysia. Avoid Schengen Europe, USA, Canada, Australia for your first trip — visa rejections are common, and the experience is more challenging. Start small, build your travel resume, then aim for distant destinations.
Step 2 — Get Your Passport Ready
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date. Most countries enforce this strictly. If your passport expires in less than 9 months, renew it before booking. Apply for renewal at Passport Seva Kendra (online appointment via passportindia.gov.in). Tatkaal renewal takes 1-3 days, normal takes 7-15 days. Cost: ₹1,500-3,500. Keep 2-3 colored photocopies of your passport in different bags.
Step 3 — Apply for the Right Visa
Different countries have different visa processes: VOA (Visa on Arrival): Thailand, Indonesia, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan. Just show passport and pay at airport. e-Visa: UAE, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Singapore — apply online before travel. Sticker Visa: Schengen, USA, UK, Australia — submit documents at consulate, attend interview. Apply at least 30-45 days before travel. Use a trusted travel agent (like Sasti Air Ticket) — DIY can lead to rejections due to missing documents.
Step 4 — Book Flights Smartly
Book flights 45-90 days in advance for best prices. Compare prices on Tuesday/Wednesday afternoons. Use incognito mode to avoid dynamic pricing. Choose airlines with good baggage allowance (most international flights allow 23kg-30kg checked). Layover tips: Direct flights are easier for first-timers but expensive. If layover is your first international transit, choose Singapore, Doha, or Dubai airports — they're easy and have great facilities. Avoid US/UK transits for first trip — extra security checks.
Step 5 — Travel Insurance (Mandatory!)
Many countries (Schengen, USA, Australia) require travel insurance by law. Even where it's optional (Thailand, Bali), don't skip it. Travel insurance covers: medical emergencies (most important), trip cancellation, lost baggage, flight delays, personal liability. Cost is just ₹500-1,500 for 7 days, but coverage is up to ₹50 lakh+. Sasti Air Ticket arranges instant travel insurance with all major providers.
Step 6 — Forex & Money Tips
Don't carry too much cash. Limit: USD 3,000 per person (~₹2.5 lakh) without declaration. Best money mix: 40% Forex Card (best exchange rate, locked rates), 30% Foreign Currency Cash (for tips, taxis, small shops), 30% International Debit Card (for backup, online bookings). Buy forex from RBI-authorized dealers like BookMyForex, ICICI, HDFC. Avoid airport money exchanges — rates are 5-10% worse. Notify your bank before traveling so they don't block your card abroad.
Step 7 — Pack Smart
Carry-on essentials: passport, visa printout, flight tickets, hotel bookings, foreign currency, forex card, prescription medicines (with prescription), phone charger, universal adapter, change of clothes, toothbrush. Checked baggage: regular clothes, toiletries (under 100ml each in carry-on), shoes. Don't carry: excessive food (most countries have customs restrictions), more than 1 bottle of liquor, more than 50 grams of gold, satellite phones, drones (illegal in some countries). Always check your destination's customs rules.
Step 8 — Airport & Immigration Tips
Reach airport 3 hours before international departure. After check-in: immigration counter for departure stamp, then security check. Keep electronics (laptops, tablets) in separate trays. At destination immigration: have these ready — passport, visa, hotel booking, return ticket, sufficient currency proof. Be polite, answer briefly. Officer may ask about purpose of visit, duration, accommodation. Stay calm — most queries are routine. Customs: declare any restricted items. Most travelers walk through Green Channel (nothing to declare).
Step 9 — Stay Safe Abroad
Save emergency contacts: Indian Embassy, your travel agent, hotel address (in local language). Get a local SIM on arrival or activate international roaming before travel. Keep digital copies of passport and visa on email/Google Drive. Don't accept rides from strangers. Use only official taxis or apps (Grab, Uber, Careem). Avoid carrying all valuables together — use hotel safe. Stay in tourist areas at night. Know basic local customs (e.g., remove shoes in temples, dress modestly in mosques).
